Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH AACHEN)

RWTH Aachen University was established in 1870 and is divided into 9 faculties. Currently, around 40,000 students are enrolled in over 130 academic programmes. Approximately 512 professors together with 4,675 academic and 2,443 non-academic colleagues are employed by RWTH Aachen University. The annual university budget amounts to 884 million Euros, of which nearly 445 million Euros are funded by third parties.

Within the university, the Institute for Botany and Molecular Genetics is chaired by Prof. Björn Usadel and comprises three distinct research groups, each led by an associate or full Professor, two of which are highly cited researchers in “Plant and Animal Sciences”. The group led by Prof. Usadel focuses on Plant Cell Walls, database design and implementation, and high throughput data analysis and visualization. The group hosts several world-renowned databases and many bioinformatics tools of the community. The group has pioneered correlation databases and is at the cutting edge of applying machine learning techniques and statistical analysis to large scale biological data.

Within the GoodBerry project, RWTH AACHEN leads Data Analysis and Integration, establishes and maintains the GoodBerry database based on its expertise in database hosting. It adds visualization and interaction capabilities to the database allowing direct access to the data and will safeguard data availability for >5 years after the end of the project. Finally it is responsible for a data analysis across species, meta-data analysis and data integration.
