Hansabred GmbH & Co. KG (Hansabred)

In 2008, Hansabred GmbH & Co. KG was founded as a European strawberry breeding and research company. The shareholders are four widely known European companies: Kraege Beerenpflanzen (Germany), Vissers (Netherlands), R. W. Walpole Strawberry Plants Ltd. (UK) and Plantas de Navarra, S.A. (Spain). 250 years of strawberry breeding have led to numerous negative domestication effects which resulted in susceptibilities to pathogens and in losses of flavor characterized by aroma patterns with low or even zero key volatile concentrations.

In this context, important aspects of the Hansabred breeding program are portrayed: high resistance to different pathogens and improved strawberry flavor. A large germplasm collection which originated from the “Professor Staudt Collection” is available with ca. 500 accessions of wild species and more than 180 cultivars. This background allows innovative pathways in strawberry breeding. Hansabred has initiated a project network together with fruit processing companies as well as national and international research institutes and universities. These contacts provide full compatibility with science-based breeding research. Experiences in the practical and scientific realization of inheritance studies exist.

Within the GoodBerry project, Hansabred is involved in horticultural activities, studies of plant health and plant pathology, environmental analysis and fruit sampling, yield, sensory evaluations. The F1 model population is provided by Hansabred as a cross-breeding of two very distinct cultivars and maintained as backup in a core collection parallel to the population on the field.
